Our paper has been published in "Microscopy". It is a collaborative work by the Institute of Multidisciplinary Research for Advanced Materials, Tohoku University, and JEOL Ltd. The paper uses light and transmission electron microscopes to describe a poly(ʟ-lactic acid) crystalline morphology at the same field of view.
The advantages of each method, such as molecular orientation information by light microscopy and the detailed nanoscale morphological features by electron microscopy, were combined with grasping multi-scale morphological characteristics of the polymer crystal. From the acquired large-area TEM images, spherulites were rapidly detected using a convolution neural network, and the space-filling rate of spherulites within the desired region was calculated.
