原義は「格子上に線を引く→線を引いて消す」。1.他動詞用法で、「AがBを相殺する」(A cancels B)、2.自動詞用法で、「AとBが打ち消し合う」(A and B cancel)または、「複数のもの(C)が打ち消し合う」(C cancel)という意味で使う。「差し引きゼロにする」ことを含意する。
例文：
1-1) A positive Cs of the objective lens can be canceled by a negative Cs generated by a Cs corrector.
対物レンズの負のCsは、Csコレクタで作られる負のCsで相殺することができる。
例文：
1-2) The change in momentum of the electron as a result of the reflection is cancelled by an equal and opposite change in momentum of the whole crystal.
(ブラッグ)反射の結果による電子の運動量の変化は、大きさが等しく逆向きの結晶全体の運動量の変化によって相殺される。
