原義(deal)は「分配する→処理する→扱う」。一般的な用法の第一の意味は、他動詞用法で「分配する、取引する」。科学技術論文では、deal with (自動詞用法)で、1.文献などで、事を「扱う」、2.困難な問題や状況などに「(うまく)対処する」という意味で使う。"treat"と違い、「物を扱う」という意味はない。例文：
1-1) A series of papers deals with the practical aspects of pole piece design.
一連の論文はポールピースの設計の実際的な側面(状況)を扱っている(論じている)。

1-2) Diffraction deals with the wave nature of light and electrons.
回折は、光と電子の波の性質を扱う。
