distort
原義は「ねじ曲げる」。一般的な用法の第一の意味は「形、外観、音などを異様なもの、不鮮明なものに変える」。科学技術論文では、1.物の本来の形、または物の通常の形を「不自然にゆがめる、ねじ曲げる、歪ませる」、2.信号(スペクトル、像など)を「歪ませる」というように使う。

1-1) For specimens of even modest thickness, core edges in EELS spectra are distorted by effects of multiple scattering.
まあまあの(適当な)厚さの試料でさえ、EELSスペクトルのコア・エッジは多重散乱の効果によってゆがめられる。
例文：
1-2) A vacancy loop distorts the crystal lattice in its vicinity, and the local bending of crystal planes causes diffraction contrast.
