原義は「炉→焦点」。「レンズの焦点合わせ」に関する用法では、"focus A on B"(他動詞用法)で、1.「レンズ(A)をBに焦点合わせする」、2.レンズなどを使い「電子や電磁波(A)をB(の焦点)に集める」、3.自動詞用法で、「機器が焦点合わせをする(ビームが焦点に合う)」という意味で使う。 4."focus A"(他動詞用法)で、レンズなどを使い「電子や電磁波(A)を集束する」という意味で使う。
