原義は「手で握られる道具→取っ手」。一般的な用法の第一の意味は、「手で物を扱う、処理する。道具、材料などを使いこなす」。科学技術論文では、1.装置や機器などが「物(試料)を扱う」、2.人が事を「扱う、処理する」という意味でも使う。
