原義は「置かれる所」。「人」が、物を所定の位置に「置く、配置する」という意味で使う。科学技術論文では、「機器、部品などを所定の位置に置く、配置する」というように使う。

対物絞りは、一次ビームと1つの回折ビームの両方を通過させるように、的確に配置されなければならない。
