原義は「後ろに曲がる」。一般的な用法の第一の意味は、「物や事(の内容)を全面的に変更して、以前とは反対(逆)の物になるようにする」。「手順、過程、方向、順序、考え」などに関して使う。科学技術論文では、1.性質などを「反対にする」、2.写真の白黒の陰影の見え方などを「逆にする」、3.法則、考えなどを「反対にする(一変させる)」というように使う。
