原義は「走る、走らせる、急ぐ、流れる」。一般的な用法における 1.人や動物が「走る」、2.線路や道路が「通っている(走っている)」という意味が発展し、科学技術論文では、1.「電子が(勢いよく)進む」、2.「線などが通っている(走っている)」というように使う。例文：
1-1) Channeling is the tendency of a beam of high-energy charged particles to run along the paths of lowest potential energy in a crystal.
チャンネリングとは、高エネルギー荷電粒子のビームが、結晶の中のもっとも低いポテンシャルエネルギーの径路に沿って進む傾向のことである。

そのCBED図形の中で、菊池ラインがそれぞれのg ベクトルに対して垂直に通っている(走っている)。
