熱電子放出電子銃の実質的な光源および光源の大きさを表す。
熱電子放出電子銃において、陰極であるタングステンフィラメントから放出された電子線は陽極に向かって進む。その際、図に示すように、ウェーネルトと呼ばれる電極に負のバイアス電圧をかけて電子線を絞る。このとき、もっとも小さく絞られた点をクロスオーバーという。クロスオーバーの大きさは直径15～20μmである。

The crossover means the real electron source or its size of the thermionic-emission gun.
The electron beam (probe) emitted from the cathode of the tungsten filament of the thermionic-emission gun travels towards the anode. As shown in Figure, the electron beam is narrowed by a bias voltage applied to the electrode called "Wehnelt". Here, the smallest point of the probe is termed the crossover. The size of the crossover is 15 to 20 μm in diameter.
