原義は「～に注意を向ける」。「観察する」の一般的な動詞。「(科学的に)観測する」という意味でも使う。「(観察している)物からより多くのことを知るために、念入りに見る」ことを含意する。 ※ 「装置」を主語にし、"装置 + observe + 目的語"とするのは違和感がある(観察するのは「人」であるため)。
