原義は「上を通る→超えて過ぎる→越える」。あるものに対し、1.量、程度、能力などの点で、「越える、勝る」という意味で使う。類語の exceed と比べ、「能力」の場合に多用する。「相手に対して勝っている」ことに重きをおく。 2.ある分野における能力の従来の限界範囲を「(高い能力により)越える」という意味で使う。
