差動排気

直結する2つの空間(部屋)を小さな穴の開いた板（オリフィス）で仕切り、それぞれの部屋を個別に排気すること。このような排気系によって二つに部屋に圧力差（真空度の差）を作ることができる。
低真空SEMでは、レンズから上の室と試料室とを差動排気することによって電子源周囲を高真空に保ち、電子放出に影響を及ぼさないようにしている。

Differential pumping means that the directly-connected two chambers in a microscope column isolated by a plate with a small hole (orifice) are individually evacuated. Using this evacuation system, it is possible to create a pressure difference (difference in degree of vacuum) between the two chambers.
For the low vacuum SEM, the chamber above the lens and the specimen chamber are differentially evacuated so that the electron source part is maintained at a high vacuum so as not to adversely affect the electron emission.
